Man has always been inquisitive. Curiosity is his basic nature. His quest to know the unknown or to know more has led him to research. The word research is originally derived from the French word “recherche", which means "to go about seeking".

The basic purpose of research is to gain knowledge about something unknown or less known. It is also done to find a solution to a pertaining problem. Research is a careful examination or investigation of facts and figures arrive at a conclusion or to seek solution for a problem. Research can be considered as discovery of unknown. Research is conducted in many fields like marketing, economics, Science, humanities, social, art and culture, etc.

Clifford Woody wrote about research as a process that comprises defining and redefining problems, formulating hypothesis or suggested solutions; collecting, organising and evaluating data; making deductions and reaching conclusions; and at last carefully testing the conclusions to determine whether they fit the formulating hypothesis.

Research has been defined as “the manipulation of things, concepts or symbols for the purpose of generalizing to extend, correct or verify knowledge, whether that knowledge aids in construction of theory or in the practice of an art” by D. Slesinger and M. Stephenson in the Encyclopaedia of Social Sciences. (Source: The Encyclopaedia of Social Sciences, Vol. IX, MacMillan, 1930)

Research can thus be referred to as original study done using observation or experiment. It is a scientific and systematic way or methodology comprising of step by step procedure to find out truth about a topic, problem, concept, pattern, etc.
